All a B O A R D...
One would think that a train trip from Petersburg to neighboring Moorefield would be very short, but it was two and a half hours of a soothing ride, offered Saturday evening, February 10, 2007. We had purchased our tickets 3 weeks in advance and then checked in on the day at the Southside Depot, Petersburg, WV's Visitor Center. This center is also a quaint shop which sells everything from jelly to porch swings all made by West Virginians, many local. A ramp made it convenient for everyone as we walked easily aboard the Valentine Express and found our way to our table.
The gentle sway of the ride enhanced the serenity of the beautiful view as we followed the South Branch of the Potomac River. Rock formations and natural snow paths in the woods made the scene from our side quite fascinating. It was fun identifying the back yards of the homes we had seen from the front on our usual Route 55 drive. The presentation of the farm land and Black Angus gave this country landscape a "back in time" feeling.
We were served beverages which were replenished as if on cue. Dinner began with a delicious salad and rolls followed by prime rib, tasty new potatoes, and green beans. The meal ended with a choice of three desserts making this trip a special treat for your valentine or a group of friends. The sounds of conversation and laughter and even "Happy Birthday" sung by the whole carload of passengers to a "youngster" presented the warm and friendly feeling we have become fond of from the people in Petersburg, WV.
